Research at the intersection of music and technology
The PXL-Music Research Expertise Centre conducts practice-oriented research driven by questions and developments in the music sector. Key themes include immersive audio, sound as an educational tool, data on music creation and consumption in Flanders, the well-being of emerging musicians, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
In Belgium, PXL-Music is fast becoming synonymous with immersive audio. We turn in-depth knowledge into practical applications and develop our own tools to raise the standard of both workflow and quality. The Immersive Music team supports artists, venues and industry organisations in building new experiences, both artistically and technically.
The Sound Education team helps children, young people, teachers, professionals and policymakers explore the impact that technology and sound can have in full-time and part-time education and across the music sector. Digitalisation and artificial intelligence bring many new opportunities and challenges, in fields ranging from STEAM and ICT to part-time arts education, income, wellbeing and sustainability.

PXL-Music: a microcosm of the music industry
Â

The centre is embedded in the country's only pop and rock school, which offers three specialisations: Musician, Music Technician and Music Manager. PXL-Music is firmly rooted in the Flemish music industry. Its lecturers and researchers are active in the international field and keep a finger on the pulse of their discipline. The campus has state-of-the-art studios and equipment, and it is also home to the Bootstraat concert venue. The team runs a range of projects across two areas, supported by Flemish and European funding and in direct collaboration with organisations from the sector.
